Tony Blair today again insisted he would win the vote on top-up fees - but hinted that he would be forced to consider his position if he lost.
Pressed repeatedly at his monthly TV press conference on whether he would stay in the job if the rebels won the day, the prime minister answered: "There is no point in doing the job unless you carry these things through."
I have argued here for a good while that the PM is wasting his time staying on, that even if Blair continues in Downing Street, Blairism is no longer governing this country. It now seems the man himself could also be coming to recognise that the game may be up.
